Weatherwash Oil Toners: How to Apply

Oil Toner in 4 Steps

Wipe on. Let sit. Buff off. Seal. That’s it.

  • WALNUT OIL TONER

  • WHITE OIL TONER

  • CLEAR OIL TONER

  • BLACK EBONY OIL TONER

What You’ll Need

  • Clean, lint-free rags
  • (Disposable) brush
  • Vinyl or latex gloves
  • WeatherWash Oil Toner
  • 1. Prep

    • Stir thoroughly. Pigment may settle at the bottom of the can.
    • If using multiple containers, combine (“box”) them into one larger container for color consistency.
    • Ensure the surface is clean and dry before application.
  • 2. Apply

    • Use a clean rag or brush to wipe or brush toner onto the wood surface.
    • Work in approximately 12" sections or plank by plank for best control.
    • Apply evenly and saturate the surface — do not apply too lightly.
  • 3. Allow Oil to Penetrate Wood

    • Let toner sit for 3–10 minutes.
    • The longer it sits, the deeper and richer the color will become.
  • 4. Buff Off Excess

    • Using a second clean rag, wipe off all excess oil.
    • Remove any product the wood does not absorb.
    • Do not allow excess oil to dry on the surface.
  • 5. Cure Time

    • You may apply up to 3 coats for deeper tone and added protection.
    • Do not touch for 24 hours.
    • Allow to dry 72 hours before sealing.
    • Light use for first 30 days.
  • 6. Sealing Over Oil Toners

Yes — you can seal over WeatherWash Oil Toners.

    1. Allow toner to cure (72 hours).
    2. ⚠ Toners alone do not provide water protection in high-use areas. Always seal for kitchen, bath, table, or flooring applications.
    3. Topcoat with WeatherWash Polyurethane or Varnish per label directions.

Tone Adjustment

Want a Darker Result?

  • Apply a second coat.
  • Let toner sit slightly longer before wiping.
  • Use Walnut or Ebony Oil Toner for richer depth.

Want It Lighter?

  • Use White Oil Toner to lighten and cool tones.
  • Wipe off sooner.
  • Lightly buff after curing to soften tone.

Pro Tips

  • The longer the oil sits, the stronger the effect.
  • Always wipe off excess before drying.
  • If slightly too dark or light, you can buff and rebalance with another coat.
  • Always seal after curing for long-term durability.

Safety

⚠ Oil-saturated rags can combust.

  • Wet used rags with water before disposal.
  • Do not leave oil-soaked rags piled or unattended.
